As you might notice, a lot of the items in this post are repeat items from past posts and seasons and are not available anymore. In fact, all of these items, with the exception of the skirt, are old (some older than others) pieces that I am remixing. When I ordered this skirt from L. Mae boutique recently, I bought it as a challenge piece. Not because there is anything wrong with the skirt but because 1) I don’t wear yellow and 2) bright yellow is typically considered for fall. I wanted to attack both of these statements, and what better way to do it than by remixing pieces I already had in my closet?
It is true that I don’t feel that comfortable in yellow and that I don’t think it’s a good color on me. However, I think I figured out the trick to wearing yellow: neutrals. A yellow like this can’t be paired with black or other bright colors. I mean, it can, but for those of us who prefer to play it safe (read: don’t feel like looking like a bumble bee or like we’re tailgating at an LSU game), neutrals are the way to go. I think I can work with this.
The second statement is that bright yellow isn’t for fall. This, too, is false. While bright yellow is typically thought to be for summer, it’s really all about the pairings. A fall staple like a trench coat can pair really well with a bright color. The trench is an essential transition piece and the yellow can be just the right pop of color to brighten overcast fall days.
I definitely think that anyone can wear yellow if they want to. Sometimes being even a little bit intentional about a look can pay off in a big way. I also think that yellow can be worn in fall.
Not ready to fully commit to bright yellow this fall? Opt for more muted yellows, like a golden or mustard yellow. Mustard yellow is one of my all time favorite fall colors. It pairs really well with navy or maroon.

This is way cute. I have the same problem at the moment… I recently bought a pastel yellow blazer and I’m trying to style it for fall, even though it reminds me more of Easter than it does Halloween/Thanksgiving yellow. I dont have much khaki colored stuff but maybe I should invest in a skirt to pair with the blazer. I’m pretty bright with my wardrobe, I don’t have very many neutrals 🙂
I LOVE pastels for fall. It can be tricky, but I think it’s more fun than wearing all neutrals all the time. Let me know if you figure out a way to style it!
