I must be sleep deprived because lately all I can think about is how to get the best sleep. During the week I have a tough time shutting off my mind and falling asleep.  Sound familiar?  I thought so. I’ve been doing some research on how to get better sleep and we have implemented a few rules in our house to help us relax a little before bedtime. These don’t happen every night but I wish they did.  I’m writing this from a couple’s perspective but all rules apply whether you live alone, with your significant other, or with a roommate. Try a few of these tips for great sleep and see how they help you.

1) No stressful talk for at least an hour before bedtime

This one is tough. For some reason, right before I fall asleep my mind is flooded with what feels like hundreds of “oh crap!” moments.  Like…Did I pay that bill? Do I have a meeting at 8:30 tomorrow? I forgot to respond to that email! Oh, can you believe what so and so said today? However tempting it is, we have decided that we can’t talk about work or finances before bed. Sometimes one of us gives in and just has to get that one thing out when the other gently reminds, “Honey, I know this seems important but let’s try to relax.” Or something to that effect.

2) No screens for an hour before bedtime

Let’s be honest…this one rarely happens.  We’re both basically connected to our devices all the time. We check our email as soon as we wake up, we check all socials before we go to sleep, and we sleep with our phones plugged in right by our bed. That being said, I notice a big difference when I shut everything off and just hang out.  I like to just do something fun or relaxing.  I like to do yoga or read (listen to) a book and Nick likes to play guitar. Together, we play cards a lot.

3) Drink some (caffeine-free) tea

This is nothing new but it’s still worth mentioning.  We like Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime tea.  Brew a cup and chat about something stress-free or read a book together.

4) Hang out with your pets

If you are lucky enough to have pet friends in your house, take the time before bed to spend some time with them.  Your pets will appreciate it and you’ll feel more relaxed.

5) Once you get in bed, stay there

If you have nightly routines that you have to do before you fall asleep, do them before you get into bed. For instance, if you adjust the thermostat before you go to sleep, do it before you get into bed. Also wash your face, brush your teeth, and lay out your clothes (or whatever your ritual is) before you get all cozy. This way you won’t have to disrupt your relaxation.
