A Little DIY: A Wreath for the Holidays

This was my first successful go ’round at a DIY holiday wreath.  I wanted to do something that wasn’t too gaudy or fussy and I hoped to create something that could easily be a wreath for all fall/winter holidays.  If you’re hoping to create a wreath with that function in mind, a berry wreath is definitely the way to go.  I was really inspired by this wreath on Pinterest but  didn’t want to dish out a lot of money to get one, so I decided to make one and I am very pleased with the result.

How to Make a Wreath for the Holidays

Here’s what you’ll need:

A twig wreath

Several berry bunches (I bought 15 but only used about 10 or 11 of them)

Berry stems (the smaller, gold and purple stems – I bought four of each color)

Wire cutters and scissors

Burlap wired ribbon

Wooden initial (spray paint, if needed)

Fishing line

Wreath hanger

I don’t think that instructions are entirely necessary for this project because the process was pretty straight forward.  Plus, the randomness is sort of what makes this project beautiful.  In any case, here’s what I did.  The berry bunches consist of several stems fastened together so I cut the paper holding them apart and separated each stem and trimmed the long wires down so they wouldn’t stick out.  From there, I just started adding the berries in.  I started at one end and worked my way around, overlapping stem over stem.  Once all of the larger berries were in place, I filled in with the smaller, purple berries.  I actually took all of the purple berries apart form their stems and added them in randomly.  I left all of the gold stems intact and twisted them in after all of the other berries were in place.  You can use some thin wire to hold everything in place, but  I was pretty happy with the placement of mine so I didn’t.  Finally, I tied one piece of burlap ribbon in a loop around the top of my wreath and hung my spray-painted wooden ‘N’ from the ribbon with fishing line.  Tying the letter to the ribbon seemed like the best way to keep the letter even.  Whenever I tried tying it to the wreath, the fishing line would slide around.  Finally, I hung the wreath from the door hanger and hung the big, burlap ribbon from the hook over top.  To update this wreath for Christmas, I’ll probably add in some red berries.  We’ll see.
