Lately I’ve just been breaking all of the rules. Don’t wear white after Labor Day? Says who? While there may still be some sense in this rule – lighter colors are cooler for the summer – it was developed for and by different people in a different time. So I say “what the hey! I’ll wear it anyway!” I do uphold one element of the rule though: I won’t wear white shoes (other than sneakers) after Labor Day. That’s just a personal thing and I don’t really think it matters. I do keep a couple other things in mind when wearing white in the fall and winter. First of all, I try to avoid light, breezy fabrics like cotton and linen. Instead, I opt for warmer pieces like a cable knit sweater or jeans. Secondly, don’t go all white. Add a little color for more interest. In this case, I just added the leopard shoe, a black bag, and a grey tee. This may not count as color, but there’s enough interest in the texture of the the sweater. Plus, the sweater isn’t all white. Thirdly, stay away from whitest whites, particularly in handbags and accessories. White jewelry may be a little too summer. Similarly, a bright white handbag might read the same way. However, a cream, ivory, taupe, or nude bag is perfectly acceptable for fall.
Keeping these rules in mind, white can be worn year-round. A white jean transitions especially well from one season to the next. Of course, all {fashion} rules are made to be broken, so experiment a little.
How do you wear white in the fall and winter? Or do you avoid white altogether in these seasons?
Much love,
Mae
