Best in Beauty: Foundation Edition

1. Maybelline Fit Me Foundation (Dewy + Smooth; Matte + Poreless)

I’m probably giving too much away by jumping right in with this one, but this is actually my favorite foundation ever. It beats out even my higher-end options. Perhaps it’s because, for the price, I can use it guiltlessly and layer and build to my heart’s content. But I’d like to think that I’m just genuinely in love with the formulae. I use both the Dewy + Smooth and the Matte + Poreless at different times. I have pretty normal skin, but when it’s hot out I get a little shiny so I use the Matte + Poreless in the summer months. In the winter, I’m a huge fan of the Dewy + Smooth.

2. Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Foundation c/o

I love this foundation for it’s super lightweight formula and buildable coverage. It actually has pretty nice coverage with just a little bit of product, but I like that you can build it as needed. I haven’t had much need to test it’s 4K claims, but I like the foundation as is and think I’ll be using it more in the coming months. Lately I’ve been pairing this foundation with MUFE’s hydrating primer (seen in my Best in Beauty: Primer Edition post from last week).

3. Tarte Amazonian Clay

This was one of my favorite foundations early in 2015 because it has excellent coverage. It’s definitely thicker than any of the options, which I’m not sure how I feel about, but it’s still pretty blendable. I like that even though it’s thick and covering, it doesn’t feel heavy or greasy. It’s one of those foundations that should really work for any skin type. The amazonian clay feels nice and makes my skin feel healthier. A final thought on this foundation is that it’s pretty long-lasting.

4. L’oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation

I bought this foundation last year before my Hawaii trip and used it in combination with the Maybelline foundations the entire time and have used it on and off since then. I was using it almost exclusively for months recently until I started using the MUFE foundation, which is pretty impressive because I don’t usually usually use the same foundation every day. It’s definitely a matte foundation, but I’ve never found it to be too drying. I’ve even been using it in the winter. As long as I use a moisturizer or hydrating problem, it’s never a problem.

5. Urban Decay Naked Skin (not pictured)

I haven’t used this one in a little while because I ran out and decided to try some other options, but this was a favorite for months last year. It has a similar consistency to the MUFE foundation (lightweight and liquidy) and is SO buildable. At first I felt like the product was to runny but I quickly learned to love it. Just use it one pump at a time and build until you’re happy with the coverage. I always felt like my foundation looked flawless when I used this product – always natural and never cakey.

Brush: BH Cosmetics Flat Blending Face Brush in the Sculpt & Blend Brush Set

I have used Beauty Blenders on and off for forever and they are wonderful for applying foundation. But they get dirty and gross and cleaning them is sort of a pain to me. So ever since I discovered a flat top blending brush a couple years ago, I almost always apply my makeup with a brush. This BH Cosmetics brush is perfect and also very affordable ($18 right now for a 10 piece set, but frequently on sale for less). I know several people who had never even heard of applying makeup with a brush, but I’m telling you, it will change your life if you haven’t tried it. The other thing I hear all the time is that good brushes are just too expensive. But they really aren’t. There are so many good brush options available at affordable prices that you really don’t need to spend a fortune – especially if you’re just getting started.
