With Mother’s Day just around the corner, I wanted to do a little post dedicated to my momma. I live pretty far from my mom and just about never get to be home for Mother’s Day. This year is no exception, but I so wish that I could go celebrate with her and take her flowers. Because some of my favorite things about me came from her.
I’ve never really been told that I look like my mom. I (along with my three sisters) do share a similar chin, but that’s about where the resemblance ends. I do, however, have a lot of personality traits that quite mirror hers. For instance, I’m really sarcastic. I love a good sci-fi movie. I enjoy reading, drawing, swimming. There’s no doubt in my mind I picked these traits and interests up from her. But most of all, the thing my mother gave me that I am most proud of is the idea that beauty – true beauty – isn’t really physical at all. Somehow, my parents managed to raise four girls without ever once praising us for the way we looked (at least not that I can remember). We were taught to value our education, treat others well, be generous in all things, and that we could do anything. These are lessons I will never forget.
For me, my mother taught me how to feel beautiful and confident without even applying makeup. But there’s something amazing about feeling beautiful inside and out. I like to feel good about the person that I am, but I also love feeling good about the way that I look.
