Checked Jacket

Asos Checked jacket, tan d'orsay pumps, white button down shirt, distressed boyfriend jeans

This checked jacket was a challenge piece I purchased.  Keep reading to see what process I went through to style it…

I recently made a few purchases from Asos and this checked jacket was one of the items I ordered.  I admit, when I ordered it, I knew it was a gamble.  I had to order it larger than I wanted because they were sold out in my size.  It’s not something I’d typically go for in the first place, but I just really wanted to try it.  So I went for it even though it seemed awkward and it was in the wrong size.  Every now and then I find those pieces that I know will be difficult, but I just can’t say no because I know that if I can pull it off, it will be so fun.

When I got this item in, I was sure I wanted to return it because it was big and awkward.  I’m not even sure that I could return it because it was a sale item, but I slept on it and soon changed my mind.  I literally dreamed this look up after thinking about the checked jacket before I fell asleep.  Sometimes I do that.  Luckily I dreamed of pieces I already own.

The jacket is sort of menswear inspired.  It’s more like an open, oversized blazer.  It doesn’t have any buttons or closures and could easily be a thrift find.  I knew I wanted to try to keep the menswear look, so the boyfriend jeans and button down make sense.  I pulled the jeans up high (Nick and I joked that I looked like Urkel) and fastened them with a belt to create some sort of an illusion of a waist.  The button down is fitted, so the proportions don’t entirely swallow me.  And the pointed toe pumps give the look just the right amount of femininity.  Finally, I accessorized the look with a simple gold necklace and “x” ring.  I forgot/decided not to wear earrings, but if I wore any, they’d probably just be gold studs.  Nothing too fancy.

Wearing:

Checked Jacket | Jeans (under $50) | Button Down | Pumps | Necklace | Ring | Belt (really old, similar)

Love the whole outfit, but especially the shoes. Too bad I cannot wear heels due to a back problem – maybe I can find these in flats, though….

I used to have a pair of flats that looked very similar to these. I found the flats at Target years ago and they are now too worn out to wear. However, I just found a similar pair from Lulu’s. If you google “tan d’orsay flats”, you might find a pair that suits you. Hope this helps!
