Savings Challenge: Shop Your Closet

In an attempt to save some mulah, I’ve challenged myself to start using some items that have been hidden in my closet for some time.  The last time I wore this dress was for my birthday in 2009 (see below).  I’ve held onto it because I love the shape and the colors.  I’ve daydreamed of turning it into a throw pillow a time or two but could never bring myself to ditch it.  Now I’m glad that I didn’t because, paired with this denim jacket that I can never seem to get enough of, this dress is just darling.  The bag I’ve been sporting lately is one that I picked up on clearance at Dillard’s when I was just a baby in college.  The style is simple and goes with most everything, especially in this timeless camel color.
I drive by a Starbucks on way to work every day and somehow have managed to not swing in there on my way to work ever.  This could be because I’m generally running late or this could be because I have incredible self-control.  I choose to believe it’s the latter.  Starbucks is a sometimes treat for me because I feel sick to my stomach when I think of how much money I could have saved in college if I had skipped it.  However, given that I saved by shopping my closet, I don’t mind if I do.  *Shameless plug: check back soon to see how I make these myself at home.
I have some pretty steep savings/financial goals, so lately I’ve been revisiting items in my closet instead of jumping online and ordering one of everything from Nordstrom.  When wearing items from seasons past (sometimes many seasons past), the look can be easily updated by adding newer pieces (i.e., denim jacket, pretty sandals, and a spike bracelet).  Also, using timeless pieces from your collection will create a timeless look.  The print of this dress is current to me and the shape is classic.  Plus, I think a good bag in a camel color will never go out of style.
Happy Savings!
Much love,
Mae
